Project Title: PAPHyR, Programme d’Amelioration de l’Acces a l’Assainissement et des Pratiques d’Hygiene en milieu Rural
Benin is MCDI's second country funded under the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) through their Global Sanitation Fund (GSF). The overarching goal of this project is to eliminate open defecation in poor rural areas and provide sustainable and equitable access to sanitation services with good hygiene practices. This project's geographical scope covers four of Benin’s 12 departments (Borgou, Atacora, Donga and Collines) and will reach a total of 2.9 million people in 8,181 localities. MCDI provides NGOs sub-grants to implement the PAPHyR objectives: increasing the number of people living in open defecation free (ODF) environments, increasing the number of people washing their hands with soap, increasing the number of people using improved latrines, promoting the construction of improved latrines and hand-washing stations, and identifying and disseminating successful and innovative sanitation and hygiene approaches.
